Holy Water

Lent started Wednesday.

In high school I gave up sodas.  As a freshmen I gave up Facebook.

This year, a friend and I decided to give up not having a fish.

What?

I know, at first glance (read), it doesn’t make any sense.  But I figured it would be a mediocre way to practice being responsible (which I need), make for a decent story and if I’m lucky, maybe even a sub-par blog post.

So without further ado, I’d like to introduce you all to Walt, my Siamese fighting fish.

Why’d you name him Walt?”

No, he’s not named after Walt Disney, Walt Whitman or Walt Mart.

I couldn’t handle Fantasia, I’m more of a J.V. Cunningham fan and that’s just not how it’s spelled.

No, he’s named after Walt from the ABC Drama Lost, which I’m unhealthily addicted to (I finished Heroes).

Are any of you giving up something cool for lent? Anybody giving up reading this blog for lent? It might be worth a try…

I don’t believe in giving up something for lent because I think people have turned it into a poor excuse to start a diet or be healthier (see all the people who give up chocolate for example…. or soda, ahem alex..haha) and then they lose sight of what they are really supposed to be giving it up for. Ive decided that I add something to my life instead… such as incorporate more time to read a verse in the Bible or call my grandparents more. I guess you kinda did this by “not giving up a fish,” because you are technically adding a fish and thus adding responsibility into your life. And Lost is completely my addiction too so I commend your name choice although Im still trying to think of some metaphorical meaning behind naming a fish after Walt… let me know if there is one..

I can’t believe you named you fish ‘Walt’ – why not name it a variety of other names…there’s Jack, John, Sawyer, James, Jin, Hugo, Hurley, Ben, Sayid… Now all that I’m going to think about when I see your fish is Michael screaming ‘Walt’

Alex, I really like this idea. You’re always so creative and fun. Sometimes I think about how you guys, and especially you, just aren’t going to be around next year and it really makes me said. Thanks for being such a great friend to me, and at other times, more than just a friend. I just want to let you know how much you mean to me. Can’t wait to hang out again soon!
