growing

Every blogging article stresses the importance of not apologizing for a blog post drought.  So I’m not apologizing… but I do want to talk a little bit about what I’ve been doing for the last few months, making the transition into the real world…

Sort of.

See, I graduated college (on time), got a job, and have been doing a little growing up.  But I say sort of because I still live in Chapel Hill, am still surrounded by college girls, and still stay out until past 2am.

I also say sort of because I have been making some changes in my lifestyle. Some say it’s about time. Some say it’s too late. I say I’m maturing. So without further ado, the top 10 ways that I’ve decided to grow up…

Number 10: I signed up for my own VIC Card.

No more of this “Do you have a VIC Card?” “No, but I have my mom’s phone number” business.  It was past time to take two minutes and get that little red triangular card to put on my keychain. Not to mention I felt bad that the Harris Teeter database still thought my mom drank Busch Lite.

Number 9: I purchase my own Propecia.

No longer can I guilt my mom into paying for my anti-balding medicine by pitching a fit when she tries to fast forward through the Hair Club for Men infomercial.

Number 8: I see AM daylight.

Cogito ergo sum: roughly translates to “I think, therefore I A.M.” I’m pretty sure Ol’ Descartes was talking about being at work before noon.

Number 7: I acquired a check book.

While your fraternity treasurer may let you pay your rent in cash, your landlord wants it in a check.

Number 6: The song ‘It’s five o clock somewhere‘ is finally starting to make sense.

Especially when Johny Kemp is singing his end-of-week symphony.

Number 5: Cream and sugar are things of the past.

There comes a point in every man’s life when he begins drinking his coffee black. For me, it was when including cream and sugar meant purchasing cream and sugar.

Number 4: Eating lunch is a treat.

Lunch in college was a social opportunity with my best friends and maybe even a girl (haha, just kidding). Lunch out of college is a relief from the 3+ hours of work you’ve already done.

Number 3: I now plan my day around getting to the bank.

The bank is open from 9-5. I work from 9-6. You figure it out.

Number 2: I’m finally moving out of my fraternity.

Goodbye peeing outdoors. Hello nice toilet paper.

Number 1: I work 9-5 Monday-Friday sitting in front of a computer screen.

Remember when you went to college and talked about how you wouldn’t end up in a cubicle? Don’t worry, you will.

I hope to return to posting at least weekly. I know you didn’t miss reading, but I missed writing.

Dec 4

The blog is spreading (no, I can’t explain it either) and I wanted to say a quick thanks to some people who are helping out/supporting me along the way.

1. New Media Campaigns (Clay in particular):

I started working there about a month ago and (t)he(y) wrote a blog post about their newest intern (me) and mentioned this blog.

I have two brief thoughts on that (though I’ll be using letters and not numbers to denote the separate thoughts because we’re already number-bulleting the Thank You’s):

a) While I do appreciate the kind words, Clay may have exaggerated a bit as to the entertainment value of this blog.

I believe he put it a little something like this:

“The posts promise to be the most humorous and beautiful prose that you’ve ever read.”

I’ve tried to set the bar low for those of you who have been reading since the beginning so that you are merely underwhelmed.

For those of you reading with the expectations that Clay set, I think it’s only fair to warn you of certainly being underwhelmed and possibly (probably) going into a long, deep depression. For that, I apologize.

b) If you read the post on NMC, you probably also noticed that the first comment (and only as of today) was from my Mom. You’re probably thinking (and are correct) that I should be embarrassed about that. Somehow though, my first emotion was one of pride.

(Yes, that last bullet was a selfish attempt to get an allowance raise for next month. I’m a little low on cash right now.)

End thoughts. Back to thanks…

2. A guy named William:

I woke up this morning and (like most mornings) immediately checked Facebook.

To my surprise, I had a message in my inbox.

To my (even bigger?) surprise, it wasn’t a mass message from some girl thanking everyone for joining her Facebook group about her lost phone and needing people’s numbers (which happened yesterday morning).

No, the message was from William who picked up this blog from the NMC post.

To my amazement, not only was he not angry that he’d wasted his time reading even a single post, he told me that he actually experienced something resembling amusement.

So, because (as far as I know) he’s the first reader who I haven’t personally forced the blog onto, I wanted to say a special public thanks for taking a chance and reading/subscribing. I really do appreciate it.

3. A guy named Chase:

This one’s not really a thanks. I came across a blog post by Chase. He’s a friend of one of my co-workers and his post had me laughing out loud (no, not LOL… the written out kind).

If you’ve enjoyed any of my posts, I think you’ll find his post less-than disappointing. It’s about a girl identified as “League-girl” who I assume he likes/has a crush on.

Enjoy…

Hello reader(s),

While I’ve been called many things, I’ll be writing as a senior in college with an unknown future, desperately holding on to what has been the best four years of my life.

A friend of mine at the end of his senior year once told me that if he had one piece of advice, it would be that “any time you are deciding whether or not to do something, sit back and ask yourself if you could only do it in college. If the answer is yes, then do it.” By following that advice (to a certain extent) I feel like the next year should be at worst, marginally entertaining.

I’ll be blogging to:
a) share that entertainment and present some intriguing conversational topics (unrealistic)
b) entertain myself, vent and get some practice at the art of blogging (realistic)

Comments are welcome. Let me know what you think of me. Let me know what you don’t think of me. Reply to posts, Facebook me (I have a strict ‘accept everyone’ policy) or email me (pomer22@gmail.com).

Wish me luck in writing this blog; I wish you luck in reading it.
